As the day progresses, hau flowers change from yellow in the morning to red or orange by late afternoon. Hau came to Hawaiʻi with Polynesian settlers in their voyaging canoes. It's tough, and its light wood was used to make canoe outriggers, fishnet floats, and fire starters. The young bark was used for cordage.
